Hello and Thank You

Portland at the Kia Center, 10 November 2025. A rookie nobody was waiting for, and a boy who had learned two words of Mandarin.

WE DID NOT FILM THE SIGNING. WE FILMED WHAT CAME AFTER.

Before the game, Christian learned to say hello and thank you in Mandarin.

Yang Hansen was not supposed to go in the first round. On draft night he wasn't seated with the other prospects — he was up in the stands, watching, and had to come down when his name was called. Christian had followed all of it. He is half Filipino on his mother's side, and he has always paid attention to Asian players in a league that has not had many of them.

So he learned two phrases. Not for a camera. For the few seconds he might get.

There was almost nobody in the tunnel that night. The hallway was quiet and the Museum was not ready for anything — no phone up, no shot framed, nobody in position.

Then Yang appeared.

Christian greeted him in Mandarin and bowed. Yang smiled, and he stayed.

He signed everything held out to him except one card.

It was the one Christian wanted most, and it was the most valuable of them — a shiny insert. The Museum does not know why he skipped it. He was moving quickly, and he signed everything else. That is the whole of what can be said.

On his way out to the floor he had no translator with him.

Coming back, he did. That part the Museum has: Yang walking up from the court at 5:47 in the evening, looking toward the boy who had greeted him in his own language. The cards are up at the rail. The pen is uncapped.

He kept walking.

The Museum records that without complaint and makes no claim about anyone's reasons.

Three cards from that night went to grading in the same submission. Two of them are here. The third has transferred — its record stays in the Museum.

One card from that night is still unsigned. It is not for sale and it is not in the Museum.
It is at home, and Christian intends to ask again.
